POST: SENIOR HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT
RESPONSIBLE TO: Registered Manager / Deputy Manager
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Registered Manager / Deputy Manager
Job Purpose:
The post-holder will work individually and leading the day to day team to deliver a high standard of care for each service user, ensuring each individual’s privacy, dignity and respect are maintained at all times.
Principle Responsibilities
To ensure, within the clinical ethos of the home, the highest standards of care for each resident, assisting, assessing and leading the staff team in ensuring that their daily needs are met. This will include their hygiene, dietary and self-help needs.
To lead the day to day shift team, whilst still working within it, in meeting the individual needs of clients in a way that is consistent, respects the dignity of the individual, and promotes independence. In liaison with colleagues ensure that the physical environment for residents is appropriate and supports the highest standards of care.
Ensuring the consistent delivery of all assessment and treatment programmes, providing reports, maintaining necessary records, communicating and organising colleagues as appropriate.
To assist clients to adhere to their care plans.
The Senior will be a person capable of supporting individuals who have a level of Dementia and /or associated behavioural issues.
The senior will display an attitude, which fosters good working relationships with staff ,clients and outside professionals.
They must be versatile and adaptable enough to learn and use a variety of skills.
They must also be able to work as part of an enthusiastic and committed team.
He/she will be responsible to the management team and will report to these at any given time. He/she will maintain good relationships with all colleagues and will adhere to the requirements of the registering authorities, for example, The Commission for Social Care and the local Social Services Teams. They will also adhere to all policies adopted by The Hallamshire, particularly in relation to confidentiality and professional behaviour.
Key Duties
PHYSICAL CARE OF CLIENTS
Enabled to work and organise and supervise the given shift. Give guidance to the Healthcare Assistants in meeting the physical and emotional needs of the clients.
NUTRITION – assisting other staff with the preparation and serving of meals, snacks and drinks. Monitoring and reporting of any concerns regarding nutritional intake to the Senior staff
HEALTH PROMOTION To encourage and support the clients to make healthy lifestyle choices. Assist in monitoring and reporting any concerns to the Senior staff
ENVIRONMENT –Enabled to provide safe and secure environment with an emphasis on adequate heating, ventilation, lighting, cleanliness, and privacy.
DIGNITY – enabling clients to exercise their basic human rights of choice, ensuring that due regard is given to privacy and individuality.
HYGIENE Encourage clients to maintain basic standards of hygiene and assist in personal care as necessary, always with a view to promoting independence.
CARE OF THE CLIENT’S ENVIRONMENT
To oversee the daily house keeping, and ensure that staff promote the following at all times.
HOUSEKEEPING – promote a safe and secure environment for clients.
CATERING – assisting in the preparation of simple meals under the guidance of the cook when requested, serving of meals and assisting clients to clearing up of the same. Work within food hygiene regulations and the policies of Hallamshire Care.
CLEANLINESS - assisting in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness within Hallamshire according to agreed policies.
LAUNDRY – assisting clients in the care of their own clothing e.g. collection, marking, laundering and safe return of personal clothes.
MAINTENANCE – reporting defects in equipment and the building fabric promptly and taking all reasonable care of the same.
VISITORS –Ensure all authorised visitors at Hallamshire are treated with respect whilst taking care to ensure they understand the basic guidelines of the security required while visiting. Report any concerns to the Senior staff.
EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL NEEDS OF THE CLIENTS
To liaise with the activities coordinator and ensure that clients have opportunities to participate in stimulating activities both mental and physical.
SOCIALISATION – ensure that the clients have every opportunity to participate in the full range of recreational activities, making full use of local facilities and escorting on trips out.
DIVERSIONAL THERAPY – assisting and supporting clients in appropriate stimulating activities on a one to one and group basis.
PHYSIOTHERAPY – Enabled in implementing programmes of physical activities for the clients.
The above should all be agreed with the activities coordinator and risk assessed as necessary.
SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE CLIENTS
To oversee the safety and security of the staff, clients and visitors and ensure that the following are adhered to by all staff members whilst leading the shift.
ENVIRONMENT staff will ensure the maintenance of a safe and secure environment all times. This will include maintaining locked facilities, and ensuring the environment is regularly risk assessed under the guidance of the senior staff
STAFF Enable to ensure their actions do not in any way contravene the safe, secure environment provided at The Hallamshire.
CLIENTS staff will be able to recognise and assist the senior staff in assessing any potential risk to security or to themselves posed by the clients.
VISITORS staff from time to time will be responsible for ensuring that visitors at The Hallamshire are met and made aware of the policies regarding the security. They will check and risk assesses any items brought in by visitors to ensure they do not pose a potential risk.
THE CARE TEAM
To oversee the day to day staff team, give advice, training and support as needed to all staff and ensure that all staff adhere to the following:
Welcome new colleagues to The Hallamshire and offer as much support as is necessary.
Attend staff meetings as required.
To participate fully in the staff supervision and appraisal process.
EDUCATION AND CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
To subscribe to a culture of learning, demonstrated by attendance at training events as required on both an internal and external basis.
To commit to an individual training plan that encompasses all national minimum standards.
GENERAL
The necessity to be flexible is of prime importance. All staff will be required to exercise patience and tolerance in the handling of all clients and their visitors, and to provide a service to meet an infinite variety of needs.
To at all times promote the image of The Hallamshire to everyone.
Use best endeavours to ensure that morale is kept high amongst clients and staff.
To work shifts on rota as required.
To undertake any other reasonable duties when necessary at the request of Senior staff

Hourly Rate £6.20 - £6.50 depending on experience and qualifications
