Job Description: As a result of a recent restructure the school is looking to form a new technical support team. This new post represents an excellent opportunity as the school is in the process of undertaking a number of exciting IT development projects to support its IT specialist status. It is planned these improvements to our IT infrastructure and facilities will result in a significant investment in future IT provision for students.
We are looking for an experienced, self motivated and enthusiastic IT professional to work in a demanding and fast paced environment. Under the direction of the IT Services Manager the successful candidate will take responsibility for many of the operational duties required to maintain and enhance the schools’ IT support services.

POST TITLE NETWORK AND SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR
GRADE SCALE 5:6
RESPONSIBLE TO THE ICT SERVICES STRATEGIC MANAGER
PURPOSE OF JOB TO MAINTAIN AND DEVELOP THE HANDSWORTH GRANGE SCHOOL’S ICT INFRASTRUCTURE INCLUDING NETWORK, SERVERS, ALL ICT BASED COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, CURRICULUM AND ADMINISTRATION ICT SYSTEMS, ENSURING THAT ALL NECESSARY DATA PROTECTION AND SECURITY PROVISIONS ARE IN PLACE.
JOB DESCRIPTION & SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. NETWORK ADMINISTRATION
Optimise, maintain and troubleshoot the network infrastructure to minimise downtime and maintain functionality.
Maintain and install IT hardware that include servers, switches, cabinets, cabling and connections, switches, etc.
Manage and monitor the network switch configurations, usage and changes.
2. SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION
Optimize, maintain and troubleshoot all server and client systems and network resources to minimize downtime and to secure and maintain access to all network resources.
Maintain the server and client applications, utilities and other centrally controlled server or client programs such as Anti-Virus software, Imaging software, etc.
Monitor and maintain Active Directory / MMC, User Accounts, Intranet service, Personal Data areas, e-mail and network data security, on all servers.
Monitor and maintain complete Data and Systems Backups.
Provide disaster recovery 3rd line support and a documented disaster recovery document with the support and guidance of the IT Services Strategic Manager.
Monitor and maintain Active Directory, Windows Servers 2003 / 2008, Windows XP / Vista clients, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP and other essential network protocols and services.
Ensure operation and maintenance of server services and server application configurations on all network devices.
Optimise, monitor and maintain security for all Operating Systems (Networked and Standalone), Web browsers, Intranet Software, E-mail and Software Applications and also stay current with the latest Service Packs, Critical Security Updates, Patches and Driver updates.
3. MIS TECHNICAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION
Support the running of the MIS suite, currently SIMS and FMS .net programs and the underlying dedicated Administration System servers. Ensure the correct operation of the Microsoft Windows 2003/2008 and SQL 2005 Server environments. Ensure appropriate backups and disaster recovery plans include all MIS data.
Ensure that all required upgrades, updates and patches are installed to the servers and workstations as required.
Provide Technical support to the Data Manager and / or End-Users of the MIS systems.
4. SERVICE DESK SUPPORT
Develop and maintain a Help Desk system that ensures that requests for work are prioritised and completed in line with the department’s standards.
Work towards achieving and maintaining ITIL recognised standards of support.
Be responsible for inventory and stock management.
Problems solve and troubleshoot issues on the network such as software, hardware, configuration and user errors.
Provide a high quality of user support, including staff training and consultation.
Install software as required and to the standards set out by the IT Services Strategic Manager.
Produce documentation on the use of hardware and software used in the school.
Ensure that the Junior Technicians are completing equipment checking and ensuring that proactive support is being carried out effectively.
Ensure that the Junior Technicians are able to provide classroom support duties in line with the IT Services Strategic Manager or IT co-ordinators requirements.
5. IT REPAIR
Co-ordinate the repair and reciprocal maintenance of all IT equipment, utilising the junior technicians to assist in carrying out repairs and rebuilds of equipment.
Install and configure new and existing IT equipment
Ensure the correct disposal of damaged and un-repairable equipment and that the school meets its recycling duties in line with current procedures.
Maintain a Health & Safety programme to prevent bad practice and ensure user safety.
5. GENERAL
As a member of the ICT Services Department you will be expected to liaise with the Strategic ICT Manager, technical support and teaching staff as appropriate.
Carry out all problem solving, changes, configuration, availability, capacity and continuity processes in-line with the Framework for ICT in Schools (FITS) recommendations and guidelines under the direction of the IT Services Strategic Manager and the school’s policies and procedures.
Actively pursue training and accreditation on agreed plans for the school network and system developments and upgrades.
To contribute to the Health and Safety of pupils and other staff in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and School Policy.
Produce an annual audit of the ICT equipment.
Research information concerning equipment, evaluate systems for best value and advise ICT Services Strategic Manager on purchases.
Produce orders for equipment and consumables after agreement with the IT Services Strategic Manager.
Take responsibility for own professional development, continually keep updated about new initiatives in educational ICT, and contribute to the school as a learning organisation.
Assist with the design and implementation of projects and school ICT initiatives.
To undertake any other duties and responsibilities, which do not change the character and purpose of the post as, may be determined after negotiations between management, the post holder and the appropriate trade union.
