To deliver to time, cost and quality the specialist design services associated with the operation of a large and successful EPC (Engineer, Procure and Construct) organisation.

The position will include the management of a team of structural and geotechnical engineers and the associated structural CAD technicians to ensure innovative structural solutions at proposal and construction stage.

My client has a strong UK and European presence in both the water/wastewater and environmental sectors, offering turnkey projects either self-performed or in conjunction with selected partners on a formal Joint Venture basis.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Management of the structural design aspects of multiple projects, delivered either via their in-house team or using external consultants appointed to specific projects.

• Responsibility for the technical excellence of structural design output, including an auditing role in respect of external third party designers, to meet formal QA requirements.

• Overall responsibility for obtaining and allocation of specialist structural staff to ensure timely delivery of projects to agreed budgets.

• Maintenance of up-to-date knowledge within the structures team, by suitably managing staff development and training.

• Personal technical involvement in appropriate projects.

• Developing and maintaining constructive relationships within and outside the company, assisting my client to succeed in its chosen markets.

• Ensuring that the highest possible safety performance flows from the structural engineering team and its actions.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Technical Manager and will be based in Barnsley. Some travel through the UK and Europe will be required.

Key requirements for the position are:

• A dynamic and approachable manager and team member.

• A professionally qualified and suitably experienced Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE) with a provable record of excellence in the design and construction of heavy industrial and other structures.

• Knowledge of the specific structural design requirements of the water/wastewater and environmental sectors, including the consequences of providing large industrial developments on mainly brownfield sites.

• The ability to work effectively, at a managerial level, across several projects simultaneously and to decisively act when more detailed and specific intervention is required.

• The skills to technically audit and approve internally undertaken structural design and to commission and validate externally sourced structural design.

• The ability to assess structural design requirements and associated budgets and to effectively manage design progress and costs, including forecasting and positively influencing out-turn position.

• Excellent team building skills and an enthusiasm for the support, training and development of staff.

• A clear role model in respect of personal and structural team safety performance.
