The Teaching and Learning technical team of the Biosciences subject area supports a wide range of practical teaching for the faculty of Health and Wellbeing. The team’s main duties include preparation of materials for under and postgraduate practical classes, troubleshooting practical issues as they arise, demonstrating instrumentation and techniques, developing future practical classes and supporting other technical / academic staff involved in supporting research project students.
We are appointing a Technical Officer for the team, who will be responsible for delivering high quality technical support, both within and outside their area of expertise, to a range of student abilities. They will demonstrate instrumentation, troubleshoot technical issues, prepare materials for practical classes and develop new methodologies as well as developing a range of technical experience in a variety of subject disciplines. They will also undertake logistical duties including the procurement of equipment, reagents and consumables and participate in the site’s Health and Safety, quality systems and operational management systems.
You will have substantial practical experience in Biochemistry and molecular biology techniques combined with some experience of the other disciplines that the team supports ranging from Cell Biology, Pharmacy and Microbiology to Analytical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and experience of working within a multidisciplinary team are essential. The post offers the opportunity for a suitably qualified candidate to extend their practical skills in the use of a wide range of analytical instrumentation and to develop skills in the demonstration of such instruments to a range of students found in the Bioscience area.
The person offered this post will be subject to a standard criminal records check by the Criminal Records Bureau. A criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from working at Sheffield Hallam University but its relevance to the duties of the post will need to be assessed before the appointment is confirmed.
